My Mum Knew Before The Call Came

Submitted by RetroRebel – I never experienced anything myself, but I believed my mum when she told us about that morning. She’s not the type to make things up—she’s practical, steady, the one who keeps everyone grounded. But that day, something was different.

I remember watching her pace the kitchen, biting her nails, eyes flicking to the clock like she was waiting for news she already knew. She didn’t say much, didn’t eat, just… felt off. Then, out of nowhere, she said, “He’s gone.”

I froze. I asked her what she meant, but she just shook her head, like the words had slipped out on their own. Her eyes welled up, and I could see it—she knew.

The phone rang maybe half an hour later. It was the hospital. Dad had passed during the night, just like Mum said.

She told us later about this dream she’d had the night before. Dad had come to her, looking like himself again—healthy, smiling, the way we wanted to remember him. They didn’t talk about anything big, just little, normal things, like they were sitting in some park they used to visit. It felt real, she said, like a quiet goodbye without actually saying the words.

I don’t know what I believe about dreams or spirits, but I believed her. Mum said she could feel him with her that morning, like he was sitting right there at the table, just out of sight.

It’s strange, isn’t it? How she just knew before anyone told her. Maybe some things can’t be explained. Or maybe love makes you feel things that go beyond what’s normal.

Either way, I never doubted her. She felt him. And somehow, I think he was really there.
